How To Wash A Structured Sports Cap Without Losing Its Shape

Last Updated: July 2026 | Author: Ankit Mange, Founder, Chaze Fit | Reading Time: 4 minutes

Hand wash a structured sports cap, or use a gentle machine cycle at 30°C maximum. Air dry over a round object like a bowl to preserve the crown's dome shape, never machine dry or iron. Heat is what permanently flattens a cap's pre-curved brim by softening the PE stiffener inside — once that happens, the brim cannot be reshaped back to its original curve. This is the same heat-degradation pattern behind most gym gear failures — see the full breakdown in our Fabric Failure Diagnostic.

Chaze Fit Performance Sports Cap correct wash routine to preserve crown structure and pre-curved brim

Why Heat Permanently Damages Cap Structure

A structured cap's brim holds its curve via a PE (polyethylene) stiffener insert. This plastic-based stiffener softens under heat and, once deformed, does not return to its original shape when cooled. This is fundamentally different from fabric wrinkles, which can often be reversed — a flattened brim is a one-way failure.

The Correct Wash Routine

  1. Hand wash preferred. Gentle machine cycle at 30°C acceptable.
  2. Air dry over a round object. Maintains crown dome shape during drying.
  3. Never machine dry. Heat permanently flattens the brim.
  4. Never iron. Same reason - direct heat damages the PE stiffener.
