Gym Bag Smells? Check Contents, Cleaning and Storage

At a glance: Inspect the bag as well as what you carry in it. Damp kit, residues and the bag’s own care needs require separate attention; one smell cannot confirm a single cause.

Empty and inspect the whole bag

Remove clothes, footwear, towels and containers. Check pockets, seams and the lining for residues or damage. Follow the bag’s care instructions before soaking, machine washing or applying a treatment.

Separate transport from storage

Use suitable pouches for damp items during a journey and unpack them afterward. Keep clean work items separate where needed. A transport pouch is not a substitute for drying or cleaning its contents.

Dry before repacking

Use the permitted drying method and check concealed areas before storing the bag. Do not assume canvas is machine washable or waterproof. Ask the maker if odour persists despite following instructions.
