What Is French Terry Cotton? (And Why It Works For Indian Travel)

French terry is a knit with a smooth outer face and loops on the reverse. It is used in casual garments such as sweatpants and sweatshirts. Read the composition label too: a construction name does not replace the fibre-content information for an individual garment.

Compare the garment, not just the fabric name

Look at the inside surface, read the fibre content and compare the waist and length measurements. A fabric label alone does not tell you how a finished garment will fit. Use a similar pair you already find comfortable as a measurement reference.

What 260 GSM and 300 GSM mean

GSM means grams per square metre. One square metre of fabric labelled 260 GSM has a nominal mass of 260 grams. The same area at 300 GSM has a nominal mass of 300 grams. These values refer to fabric area, not the weight of an entire pair of sweatpants.

The relative difference is (300 − 260) ÷ 260 × 100, approximately 15.4%. This arithmetic does not establish a difference in warmth, comfort, durability or finished-garment weight.

Choose for your routine

For travel, consider how the waistband and thighs feel while seated. For a commute, consider your other layers and where you will carry a layer when you remove it. Your route, weather and preferences matter alongside fabric weight. There is no universal GSM choice for every Indian city and season.

Check care before buying
