Lined vs Unlined Shorts: What's The Difference?

Last Updated: August 2026 | Author: Ankit Mange, Founder, Chaze Fit | Reading Time: 4 minutes

Lined shorts have a built-in inner liner — usually a mesh or compression-style brief — sewn directly into the shorts, eliminating the need for separate underwear or compression shorts underneath. Unlined shorts are just the outer fabric with no inner layer, meant to be worn over your own underwear or compression gear. For most gym and running use, lined shorts are the simpler, more practical choice — one layer instead of two, less chafing risk, and no separate compression shorts to wash and pack.

What's Actually Different In Construction

Lined shorts have a second layer of fabric — typically a lightweight mesh liner in a brief or compression-short shape — stitched into the waistband on the inside of the outer shell. This inner layer sits directly against the skin, providing light compression and a moisture-wicking surface, while the outer shell handles the visible fit, stretch, and durability. Unlined shorts skip this second layer entirely — just the outer fabric, worn over whatever you choose to wear underneath.

Side-By-Side

Factor Lined Shorts Unlined Shorts
Layers worn One (liner built in) Two (shorts + your own underlayer)
Chafing risk Lower — liner reduces inner-thigh friction Depends on what you wear underneath
Packing/laundry One item to wash and pack Two items (shorts + compression layer)
Flexibility Fixed liner type Choose your own underlayer
Best for Most gym and running use — simpler, fewer layers Anyone with a strong preference for their own compression gear underneath

Why Most Gym Shorts Are Lined By Default

The built-in liner solves the same chafing problem that drives people to wear compression shorts underneath unlined shorts anyway — it's just built into the garment instead of being a separate purchase. This is why most performance gym and running shorts, including the Chaze Fit AOP Sports Shorts, are lined by default.

Founder Note

We get asked fairly often whether people need to wear anything under our shorts, and the honest answer is no — the liner is built to be worn directly against skin. It took us a few fabric iterations to get the liner's stretch to genuinely match the outer shell's 4-way stretch, since a liner that doesn't move with the outer fabric defeats the purpose.

The Chaze Fit Approach

The Chaze Fit AOP Quick-Dry Gym Shorts (₹799) use a lined construction with a mesh liner matched to the outer shell's 4-way stretch, so both layers move together rather than bunching or restricting. For the full fabric breakdown, read our 4-way stretch fabric explainer.
